A third lane has been added to each direction of State Route 161 from I-270 to U.S. 62, taking the road from four lanes to six. The extra lane of this heavily congested 6.3-mile portion will support anticipated traffic increases resulting from the large-scale economic development projects in the area.
Noise walls are in the process of being installed in select areas along the highway to mitigate sound impacts on nearby residents.

Phase 2 of the project includes widening the stretch of the road between Clover Valley Road and US 62 from two to three lanes and making other improvements, including a community path parallel to the road.
In addition to the new lane, the project also includes a realignment of the intersection of Green Chapel Road and US 62 and new signals at the intersection. The project is scheduled to start in spring of 2026 and be completed in late 2026.
